Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal are the two monuments almost every visitor to Agra sees, usually on the same day. Tajnuma sits between them in spirit and on the map: a pure vegetarian Mughlai restaurant on Fatehabad Road in Tajganj, the neighbourhood around the Taj, open from noon until midnight. See the full menu.
Agra Fort was the seat of the Mughal court through the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Walking its courtyards — the Diwan-i-Am, the Jahangiri Mahal, the terrace where Shah Jahan looked out at the Taj — is the best introduction there is to the court whose kitchens shaped Mughlai cooking.
We built our menu on that lineage, cooked entirely without meat. Our Agra Fort visitor guide covers what to see inside; this page is about where to eat afterwards.
Many visitors see the Taj Mahal early, the Fort late in the morning, and then need a proper lunch. We open at 12:00 pm. The Mughlai Thali is the quickest complete meal on the menu: kofta, soya keema, Dal Tajnuma, biryani, raita, bread and a sweet on one plate.
If you would rather eat at the end of the day, we serve until midnight. That leaves time for one of the chef’s tasting menus, which are served course by course.
The Mughal imperial kitchen had its own class of meatless dishes, and Akbar himself kept a growing number of days without meat — his court chronicler wrote it down. We tell that story in Akbar’s Vegetarian Days. Everything at Tajnuma is pure vegetarian, and Jain preparations are available on request.
Lunch after the Fort or a late dinner, every day of the week.
