Our one-day itinerary gets you the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort at a brisk pace. A second day changes the trip: the fort gets the time it deserves, you see the Taj from across the river, and you can reach Fatehpur Sikri without racing the light. This is the plan we would give a friend.

First, Check the Day of the Week
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. If one of your two days is a Friday, make that your Fatehpur Sikri and far-bank day, and do the Taj on the other. If you arrive on a Thursday evening and leave on a Saturday, it works perfectly. Check current hours and buy tickets in advance on the official site.
Day One, Morning: The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort
Be at the gate for opening at sunrise. Two to three hours at the Taj Mahal is right, including the walk to and from the gate; our visiting guide covers tickets, gates and what you cannot carry in.
Breakfast after, then Agra Fort. Seeing it second means that when you reach the tower where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at the Taj, you have already stood inside it.
Day One, Afternoon and Evening: The Far Bank
A long lunch and a rest through the hottest hours. Then cross the Yamuna for the quieter bank: Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj; the tiled Chini ka Rauza nearby; and Mehtab Bagh for the Taj Mahal at sunset, across the water.
Dinner back on the Taj side of the river. After a day like that, it is the meal to linger over.
Day Two, Morning: Fatehpur Sikri
Leave early for Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone city Akbar built and then left. It needs a half day: the palace complex and the Jama Masjid with its Buland Darwaza are separate sites, and the drive takes time in each direction. Going early beats both the heat and the crowds.
Day Two, Afternoon: Sikandra and the Bazaars
Back in Agra, Akbar's tomb at Sikandra completes the story you started at Fatehpur Sikri: the emperor who built that city is buried here, in grounds full of deer and monkeys. It sits on the Delhi side of Agra, which makes it the natural last stop if you are leaving by road towards Delhi.

Where to Stay and Eat
Staying in Tajganj or along Fatehabad Road puts you close to the Taj Mahal's gates for the sunrise start, which is what matters most. Plan a long lunch each day and one proper dinner.
